Age of Swords – Michael J Sullivan

Clash of cultures and clash of technologies in the 2nd installment of Michael J. Sullivan’s Legends of the First Empire series following on from Age of Myth.

All the usual fantasy tropes are here – elves, dwarfs, giants etc. – but set in a time when humanity is making an accelerated exit from a wheel-less Bronze Age.  The process of their doing so gives the story the originality required to lift it above the norm.

Pleasant reading – I enjoyed the characters of Moya, Roan,  and Raithe especially – if not very demanding. I liked it but prefer the more complex plotting of his Ryrie books.

My feeling was that it’s aiming more at the Young Adult market, but Sullivan fans of all ages will still enjoy this series.
